Larry Madowo: People in India keep asking to take pictures with me because I am black

CNN journalist Larry Madowo has lamented about how he went through a difficult time with the residents of the city of New Delhi, India after visiting this week.

Through his Twitter page, the journalist said that he could not enjoy free time in peace because everyone who saw him was asking to be photographed with him.

The journalist said that many were meeting him to ask for a picture with him just because his skin is black and not because they know him from his presence on international television for a long time.

The broadcaster also noted that such a situation never happened the last time he was in India.

He said that when he was in China, many people were also asking him to take pictures with them, even bringing their children for pictures.

“Random people keep asking me for pictures in New Delhi, and not because they recognize me from TV. It’s because I’m Black/foreign. I don’t get it,” Madowo tweeted.

“I get asked for pictures A LOT in China. They bring their kids, everyone smiles, it’s cute. I don’t remember this happening when I was last in India in Mumbai or Bangalore. But my Israeli friends have also been asked for pictures in Delhi by strangers.

“Some people find it offensive that they’re being exoticized or commoditized like this. But I’m used to taking pictures with people who see me on TV for their social media feeds.

“We once got stuck deep in Murang’a central Kenya with a white friend. “Muthungu!” the kids shouted But we move, irregardless,” he added.
