Gospel rapper David Muthengi, popularly known as Holy Dave, has opened up about his struggle with drug addiction while in school.

Speaking during an interview with Nation, Holy Dave said that he was doing drugs the entire time he was a student at Machakos boys high school.

The gospel rapper said that he completely failed in his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam because his addiction was so bad he suffered memory loss.

“Drugs affected me vibaya sana. There is no way I could pass my exams,” said Holy Dave.

Adding that;

“I had to go for bridging courses for a year, I had to go for pre-university Daystar university for a year, I had to waste another year doing computer courses. So I wasted three years of my life and I pinched myself and said “Dave this life is yours you have to make something out of it” and that’s when I picked up the pieces and moved on.”

Holy Dave completely turned around his life and focused on his study. He graduated with an undergraduate degree from Daystar University,  Master of Business Administration (MBA) from USIU and he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at the University of Nairobi.

“During my college years I studied very hard, I did Applied computer science at Daystar University and passed. Did an MBA at USIU, I specialized in strategic management and finance.

After that God opened doors I did professional courses in Financial Modeling and advanced financial modeling.

I became an investment analyst. Then God opened further doors and I started my Ph.D. in entrepreneurship and small business development at the University of Nairobi.

Right now I am working on my research, which is my dissertation,” said Holy Dave.
