Why Bahati still considers himself a gospel artiste even after switching to secular industry

Bahati quit the gospel industry in 2020 describing it as a rotten industry. The singer now claims he still considers himself a gospel musician even though he is releasing secular songs.

The controversial singer-cum-politician claims he cannot describe himself as a secular artiste because he is not vulgar.

“I think for me I can still call myself a gospel artist but I sing gospel when I want to express myself to God, I don’t want to do gospel music as a business,” Bahati said in a recent radio interview.

Bahati added that he is not a secular artiste because he sings about love.

“So I just do good love songs also because you know even in our weddings in church we need entertaining music. I cannot call myself a secular artist because secular is not me, I’m not vulgar, I’m not. I promised God that I will never leave him, and he knows. I have never left God, you know everything I have is from God,” he said.

Bahati publicly announced he had ditched the gospel industry in June 2020 during an interview with MC Jessy on his new YouTube segment Jessy Junction.

“The Gospel is Christ. I have Christ in my heart and I believe in God and he is the reason I’m at the top. I cannot leave Christ but the gospel industry is rotten.” Bahati said.

He says for his peace of mind, leaving the industry was the best decision.

“I was fought a lot in the gospel industry so when I do a gospel song, I do it for God, not for the people. I just separated myself from the gospel industry for a while, but I’m in Christ and the Lord is my personal saviour.”

Bahati said the audience for his secular music was just not people in the secular world but the very same church members who criticise him for his kind of music.

“I think right now ‘Wanani’ is the most played song in the country, and it’s because ina-requestiwa both na watu wako secular na watu wako church because I’m still a son of Christ.”
