Shaffie Weru recalls how he nearly slipped into depression after he was fired from Homeboyz Radio at midnight

Shaffie Weru’s 17-year radio career came to an abrupt end on March 27th 2021 when he was unceremoniously fired from Homeboyz radio where he was earning a fat salary of Ksh682,5000 a month.

Shaffie alongside his co-hosts Neville Musya and Dj Joe Mfalme were accused of shaming a victim of sexual violence whose boyfriend threw her off the 12th floor of a building because she refused to spend the night at his place.

The three presenters issued public apologies, but some Kenyans weren’t convinced that they were sincere.

Shaffie Weru fought back after being fired, he threatened to sue his former employer Radio Africa Group for wrongful termination.

The veteran media personality threatened to file a case against the station demanding Ksh21 million for ‘unlawful termination’ in a demand letter and gave it a seven-day ultimatum.

Radio Africa countersued Shaffie for Ksh150 million for loss of business and reputational damage to the company’s brands.

Shaffie recently opened up about his firing from Homeboyz Radio during an interview with Nairobi News.

The media personality said his sacking really destabilized him given that he had been on radio for 17 years, only to be sacked at midnight.

“It has never happened to me before and it honestly destabilized me because you know we got fired like at midnight on Twitter,” Shaffie said.

He however says his solid friends were very supportive during that moment as he was in the verge of falling into depression.

Shaffie further noted that he was fired not necessarily because of his blunt comments while on air but rather something more complicated.

“The reason I was fired you need to understand was never about the comments, it was about the companies that were spending money on me because I was a very big presenter. Their customers were the ones attacking me, so they also started attacking the companies. That was the reason why my firing was effected. It was not because of what I said,” he said.

While opening up to what led to the unfortunate turn of events, Shaffie says he was fired only two days after making a radio comeback following a year-and-a-half mainstream media hiatus.

“When Covid came, one of my star presenters GMoney contracted the virus and someone needed to step in because we were short-staffed. At the time I was the head of Homeboyz radio as we were trying to re-acquire it from Homeboyz Entertainment to Radio Africa, and then the story happened,” he said.

Shaffie however still express regrets over his comments, saying he wishes he was more informed of the subject matter because he meant no harm while giving his opinion.
