Veteran Tanzanian singer Joseph Haule alias Professor Jay fell sick at the beginning of 2022 and was hospitalized for months in critical condition.
Professor Jay’s situation was highlighted by rapper Ambwene Yessayah aka AY who took to social media in February 2022 to appeal to the public to support the ailing singer whose hospital bill was ballooning.
AY said that Professor Jay is spending Tsh4 million (Ksh200,000) a week on medical expenses and was in need of financial support.
“The family is yet to formally ask for help in this matter. But it is our responsibility to help because he is our colleague and one of us having entertained us for more than two decades,” said AY.
Professor Jay underwent dialysis at Muhimbili National Hospital for close to a month as doctors also tried to stabilize his pressure.
It is alleged that Professor Jay’s condition became worse after he also contracted Covid-19.
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu ultimately waived Professor Jay’s medical bill.
On Sunday February 20th 2022, Professor Jay himself spoke on his condition when Parliamentary Committee on Social Services and Development visited him in hospital to check on him.
The former Mikumi constituency MP went underground after he was discharged from hospital, only to resurface online on May 2, 2023.
Professor Jay took to social media to thank his fans, friends, and family for their support as he recovers.
He was completely unrecognizable in the photo he shared on social media.

Greetings my fellow friends,
Firstly, I would like to thank God Almighty for healing me and giving me another chance to live. My condition was indescribable, but thanks to God, I will praise and worship Him all the days of my life.
Secondly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Her Excellency, the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, our mother Dr. Samia Hassan Suluhu and her government for financing all my medical treatment at Muhimbili and abroad. Thank you very much, Mama, and your entire government, including your party and government leaders who visited me and comforted me every day.
Thirdly, I would like to thank the Chairman of my party, CHADEMA, Commander @freemanmbowe, all party members, and senior leaders for their efforts to ensure that I received the best medical treatment by working together with the government. Additionally, I am grateful to all the doctors and nurses at Muhimbili and other hospitals where I received top-quality medical care for more than a year, especially during the 127 critical days I spent in the ICU. You all dedicated your abilities to ensure that you saved my life. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Lastly, and of great importance, I would like to thank all Tanzanians who volunteered their prayers and contributions to ensure that I received medical treatment. To be honest, it helped me a lot to pay my previous bills before the government decided to intervene and take over this burden. I am deeply grateful, and I will not forget your kindness.
