Cybersquatting is registering, selling or using a domain name with the intent of profiting from the goodwill of someone else’s trademark,President Uhuru Kenyatta’s.
Generally, it is the practice of buying up domain names that use the names of existing businesses with the intent to sell the names for a profit to those businesses.
President Uhuru Kenyatta’s long time official campaign website, uhuru.co.ke is now on the market for 10,000 euros
In Kenya, cybersquatting is rampant especially close election year and it seems this is what has happened to the domain Uhuru.co.ke.
Launched in 2011, the site was instrumental in the 2013 elections which saw Uhuru Kenyatta win the presidency through the Jubilee ticket.
This is the same website that showcased Uhuru’s bio as well as the Jubilee party manifesto.
Additionally, President Uhuru Kenyatta for a long time had this domain name on the Official Presidential Twitter account.
It is not clear how the president’s digital team forgot to renew this domain, but the cybersquatter who jumped at the opportunity is now asking for about 10,000 Euros for the website, an equivalent of Ksh. 1.1 million to release the domain.
