New York City, the birthplace of hip hop, witnessed a historical moment as the hip hop community gathered at the Hall des Lumières to celebrate the genre’s 50th anniversary.

The event brought together renowned rappers, producers, and hip hop enthusiasts from around the world, including East Africa’s very own Octopizzo.

As the face of Hennessy in Kenya, Octopizzo found himself in the midst of rap legends, some of whom have business partnerships with the iconic cognac brand.

Hip hop, a genre that started as an underground movement in the Bronx, New York, has evolved over the years to become a powerful cultural force that has left an indelible mark on music, fashion, and society at large.

The celebration at the Hall des Lumières marked fifty years since DJ Kool Herc, widely considered the father of hip hop, threw his legendary back-to-school party in the Bronx, igniting a musical revolution.

Octopizzo, a prominent hip hop artiste from Nairobi, Kenya, known for his thought-provoking lyrics and distinct flow, made his way to New York to be part of this momentous occasion. His association with Hennessy, a brand that has shown a long-standing commitment to hip hop culture, made him an ideal representative for the celebration.

Upon arriving at the Hall des Lumières, Octopizzo was humbled by the ambiance, surrounded by fellow African hip hop artistes Navio from Uganda and M.anifest from Ghana. Together, they represented the vibrant and burgeoning hip hop scene in their respective countries and the continent at large.

The highlight of the night was the electrifying performance by Nas, one of the most respected figures in hip hop, whose timeless lyrics and impeccable storytelling have solidified his place among the genre’s greats. Octopizzo’s admiration for Nas’ artistry had him captivated throughout the performance, realizing the impact that hip hop has had on artistes worldwide.

As the night progressed, Octopizzo’s presence caught the attention of established rappers and hip hop moguls in the industry who are in business partnership with Hennessy.

Among them were the legendary producer Mannie Fresh, whose innovative beats have shaped the sound of hip hop, and Maino, a seasoned rapper known for his unique style and authenticity.

These interactions served as a testament to hip hop’s ability to transcend borders, bringing artistes from different backgrounds together through their shared passion for music.

The event presented an opportunity for Octopizzo to engage with his musical idols and learn from their experiences. It was a surreal moment for the Kenyan rapper, who had once dreamed of making it big in the music industry but now stood among the very individuals who had inspired his journey.

As the night came to a close, Octopizzo reflected on the significance of hip hop turning 50 and its continued influence on artistes worldwide. The genre’s ability to give a voice to marginalized communities and address social issues has been a driving force behind its longevity and global appeal.

The celebration in New York served as a reminder that hip hop is not just a music genre; it is a movement that empowers, unites, and shapes culture.

Octopizzo returned to Kenya with a newfound sense of purpose, determined to use his platform to push the boundaries of hip hop and inspire the next generation of African artistes to make their mark on the world stage.
