Mike Sonko was impeached on December 3rd after a vote by Members of the County Assembly (MCA) of Nairobi.

88 members of the county assembly voted to support the impeachment motion while 2 others voted against the move.

The embattled Governor is being accused of gross violation of the Constitution and other laws, abuse of office, commission of crimes under the national laws and lacking the mental capability to run the county government.

Prior to the impeachment vote, Sonko had taken a group of MCAs loyal to him to Mombasa in a bid to scuttle his impeachment.

Governor Mike Sonko cosigns Mbogi Genje, promises to support them 100%

Rumors had it that pro-Sonko MCAs were bribed by the governor to vote against his impeachment, or simply to abstain to deprive the move of the constitutional threshold needed to impeach the governor.

Bloggers including Robert Alai claimed that the MCAs were bribed with as little as Ksh 2000 to scuttle Sonko’s impeachment.

Imara Daima MCA Kennedy Ouma angrily responded to Alai’s claim of Ksh 2000 bribe by flaunting $10,000 alleged bribe paid to them each by Sonko.

$10,000 is about Ksh 1.1 million, meaning that bribes alone to MCAs came to over Kshs. 54 million, without factoring in costs of flights and accommodation.
