Makau Mutua believes that the Office of the Vice President/Deputy President has had somewhat of an issue ever since Kenya got independence in 1963.

Since Independence, the Republic of Kenya has since had 10 Vice/Deputy Presidents and each one of them has had to go through a challenging ordeal so far and the outspoken lawyer who studied law in Harvard, Makau Mutua is here to remind us of just that.

Kenya has had Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Joseph Murumbi, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki, Josephat Karanja, George Saitoti, Musalia Mudavadi, Michael Kijana Wamalwa, Moody Awori, with Kalonzo Musyoka as the last Vice President before the constitution was amended changing the name and title of Vice Presidents to Deputy President, William Ruto is the first Deputy President which is the equivalent of Vice President in the old constitution.

All the aforementioned second in command to the President, Makau Mutua believes every one of them had to have an ordeal or two of their own while being the second in command.
