DJ Pinye says Gengetone genre is dead

The respected veteran deejay who is the man behind Octopizzo’s mainstream success DJ Pinye sat down on a recent exclusive interview with Standard Media and talked about the current state of the Kenyan music scene and where it’s headed.

According to the deejay, the Kenyan artistes at the top at the moment are lazy because they had their success way too easily as opposed to the artistes that got recognition years ago.

DJ Pinye strongly believes that artistes nowadays are not ready and willing to put in work in releasing good, quality, timeless songs that will compete with the standards of other artistes across Africa.

DJ Pinye went ahead to touch on the general music industry in Kenya, touching on the Gengetone genre in the country that has employed many youths and created opportunities for young men and women to showcase their unique talent.

The brainchild behind the phenomenal “The Beat” show that changed a lot of artistes lives in the past says that Gengetone artistes are limiting themselves by putting out songs that will only receive airplay only in Kenya and not anywhere else in the world.

He went further to challenge the record producers out there who are producing Gengetone beats to produce songs that will be played not only in Kenya but in Nigeria, Ghana, Nigeria, and top countries in Africa just the way South Africa is dominating in hip hop, Kwaito, and Amapiano and receiving airplay everywhere in the continent as well as Nigerian Afrobeats/Afrofusion/Afropop from West Africa dominating globally.

“Something serious needs to happen, these young guys do not want to work… it’s shortcuts all the way, someone like a Diamond needs to come locally and then people realize the work ethic…there is no artiste in Kenya who has a work ethic like Diamond Platnumz, then why are we complaining? It means you don’t want to work.

“People do music for Kenya only yet there’s the internet, the world is so small, you can’t play gengetone outside Kenya, I want you to do a song that will play even in South Africa,” DJ Pinye said on the exclusive interview with Standard Media.

DJ Pinye’s sentiments have rubbed off some top entertainers in the music industry the wrong way and some are not having it one bit.

Despite saying what he said, the deejay sticks to what he said because he believes that’s the honest truth.

I am a Pan-Afrikanist to the core and love to let the world know what they are missing in Africa. I might do that through music and some interesting posts from time to time so please bare with me.

I will always be real though, that's a guarantee.
