Aisha Jumwa had been a guest of the state for the past four night over her murder charges, the firebrand Malindi MP has however been released on bond by the court.

Aisha Jumwa and her lover Geoffrey Okuto returned to court on Friday morning October 23rd for a ruling on their bail applications after denying murder charges following their arraignment in court on Thursday.

The two denied any involvement in the killing of Ngumbao Jola, a 48-year-old-man, who was murdered in chaos that ensued during campaigns for a by-election in Ganda Ward in Malindi on October 15 2019.

The accused were first arrested last year, but were later released on Ksh 500,000 cash bail each, pending a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

The Malindi MP and her lover were recently arrested again and spent four nights at Port Police Station in Mombasa.

They were presented before Mombasa High Court Judge on Thursday and Friday for a ruling on their bail applications.

The prosecution on Thursday opposed bond application of the two suspects, Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecution Alloys Kemo said Jumwa holds an influential position in the society and is likely to interfere with key witnesses in the case.

Jumwa and her lover’s defense team, which comprises of lawyers Wycliff Ombetta, Danstan Omari and Jared Magolo, strongly opposed the prosecution’s assertions that their clients could intimidate the key witnesses in the case.

Ombeta said the assertions that Jumwa is influential cannot be used as the basis to deny her bail. Lady Justice Njoki Mwangi agreed with Jumwa’s defense and freed the accused on a Ksh 3 million bond with an alternative of Ksh 4 million cash bail. The controversial MP was also ordered to surrender passport.
