DJ Shiti: Bien and Butita revived my career after I hit rock bottom

Comedian and actor DJ Shiti has made a dramatic return to the spotlight — but behind his recent surge in popularity lies a deeply personal story of hardship, survival, and unexpected salvation.

In a candid message posted on his Instagram stories on Saturday, July 26, the beloved funnyman, whose real name is Steven Oduor Dede, revealed he had been teetering on the edge of emotional and professional collapse until two of Kenya’s biggest entertainment names — Bien-Aimé Baraza and Eddie Butita — stepped in.

“Bien, thank you so much for giving me a chance to stand again,” Shiti wrote, his words brimming with raw vulnerability.

“You gave me space, love, and support at a time when I needed it most. It feels like a new beginning, like being born again. Deals zinaniandama left, right, and centre. Shaka!”

It’s the kind of heartfelt admission that fans rarely get to see from comedians — performers often expected to be perpetually upbeat. But DJ Shiti, once a fixture on TV screens and comedy stages, says his path hasn’t been all laughter and limelight.

While audiences delighted in his quirky humour and unforgettable roles — most notably in The Real Househelps of Kawangware — DJ Shiti was battling demons behind the scenes.

Sources close to the actor claim that following a string of personal and professional setbacks, he quietly retreated from the public eye, struggling to land gigs and feeling increasingly overlooked in an industry he helped build.

At his lowest, Shiti considered walking away from comedy altogether.

But just when hope seemed lost, salvation came — not from a talent agency or a production house, but from two friends who saw past the headlines and memes to the man behind the punchlines.

Sauti Sol’s Bien — now a thriving solo artist — took a chance on DJ Shiti when few would.

Not only did he offer Shiti a feature in the visually electric music video for his hit single “All My Enemies Are Suffering”, but he also included him in promotional content, effectively reintroducing the comic to an entirely new audience.

The video became a viral success, racking up millions of views and spawning memes that, for once, celebrated Shiti rather than ridiculing him.

“Bien didn’t just give me a role — he gave me a stage to rebuild my image,” Shiti later said in a private conversation with friends. “That song saved me.”

Equally instrumental was comedian-turned-producer Eddie Butita, whom Shiti refers to not just as a colleague, but as a brother.

“Butita, my brother, you have always had my back. You’ve been more than a friend; you are family. Your support reminded me of my worth when I almost forgot,” Shiti wrote.

Butita cast him in Kamum, a wildly popular YouTube series that blends biting social satire with lighthearted sketches. It became a runaway hit, reigniting Shiti’s brand and reminding the public of his comedic brilliance.

Insiders reveal that Butita personally vouched for Shiti during meetings with sponsors and even covered some of his production costs to ensure the actor had a shot at redemption.

It’s not the first time Butita has played a pivotal role in Shiti’s journey. In a 2020 interview with Churchill Ndambuki, Shiti credited Butita with connecting him to filmmaker Abel Mutua — a move that helped land him a breakout role years earlier.

Today, DJ Shiti is not only back in the game — he’s winning.

Brand endorsements, script offers, and show bookings are reportedly pouring in. He’s become a viral fixture once more — but this time, on his own terms.

“Because of both of you, I am up again, stronger, better, and focused. Asanteni sana. This journey means everything to me. Love and respect always,” he wrote in his emotional post.
