Renowned pioneering rapper — and a true pillar of Kenyan hip-hop — Chiwawa, a name that needs no introduction, has officially dropped the moniker his fans have known him by for decades. He now goes by Xiengo.

Under his new name, Xiengo has released a brand-new studio album titled ‘Early Bud’, marking a fresh start in both his personal life and music career.

The rebrand isn’t just cosmetic — it’s deeply personal. Xiengo is derived from his real name, Ken Gaciengo Mwai, blending authenticity with a renewed sense of purpose.

“The name Chiwawa was a nickname given to me by friends when I was growing up in South C. I loved the Chihuahua dog,” the veteran rapper shared with Biggest Kaka. “But my real name is Ken Gaciengo Mwai.”

For those who know their Kenyan hip-hop history, Chiwawa’s influence runs deep. Alongside heavyweights like Bamboo, Juliani, Abbas Kubaff, and Kleptomaniacs, he helped lay the foundation for today’s neo-rappers. Without their groundbreaking efforts, icons like Octopizzo and Khaligraph Jones might not have carved out successful careers in music.

Now, Xiego returns like he never missed a beat, recharged after a brief hiatus. “This is a new me, new focus, new tunnel vision, and a new chapter of my life,” he declared.

Moving forward, make sure you refer to him as Xiengo — because a legend just turned the page.

From now on, it’s Xiengo. Get it right.
