President Uhuru Kenyatta has promised Kisumu residents that the ongoing construction of the KShs 1.4 billion Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo will be completed by April 2021 to host Gor Mahia Vs AFC Leopards derby.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the 30, 000 capacity stadium at the Kisumu ASK ground in Mamboleo was officiated by Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed in June this year.
The Sports CS said the construction of the stadium was part of the government’s expansive plans to promote sports across the country.

On Thursday, October 22, 2020, President Uhuru Kenyatta inspected the ongoing construction of the Ksh 1.4 billion Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium together with the ODM leader, Raila Odinga, and other leaders from the Luo Nyanza region.
Speaking during the event, President Uhuru promised Kisumu residents that the stadium’s construction will be completed by April 2021 to host Gor Mahia Vs AFC Leopards derby.
“Leo hii tuko hapa kuweka jiwe la msingi ya kuhakikisha ya kwamba hii stadium imeanza. Na tumepatiwa ahadi na yule ambaye amepatiwa kandarasi ya kwamba mwezi wa nne tutarudi hapa kufungua huu uwanja kirasmi, na kuangalia na kuwitness team ya Gor Mahia wakicheza na wenzao kutoka kule ingoo.
So hapa tuko na ndugu wangu speaker wa senate Ken Lusaka nimemwambia aende awaambie waende wajipange tutaona nani atakua na nani atatokea juu siku hio,” said President Uhuru.
Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo will feature facilities for football, rugby, tennis, hockey among other disciplines once completed.
