Four pupils were among seven people who died in a grisly Friday evening accident in Kwale county.

The accident took place on the same day four schoolgirls perished in a ghastly crash involving matatus in Mwea, Kirinyaga County.

Four primary school pupils were part of seven people who died in a grisly crash along the Mombasa-Lunga Lunga road in Kwale County, after a hired matatu ferrying school children was hit by a speeding lorry.

A woman and her two children also died in the accident, while several other people sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Msambweni Referral Hospital.

The deceased pupils from Mombasa’s Kisauni Primary School were headed home in a hired matatu after attending a school tour at Shimoni caves.

Shimoni Police Station OCS Abdullah Tato said the exact number of school children who were in the matatu was not immediately established.

The matatu, which usually operates within Mombasa plying the Bamburi route attempted to join a road at Kanana junction whilst there was an oncoming lorry on the other side of the road.

The Tanzanian lorry, which was ferrying mangoes from Msambweni to Lunga Lunga, hit the matatu from behind and lost control.
