Comedian Gilbert Baraza, popularly known Mtumishi, has opened up his life in crime, revealing that he specialized in highway robbery.

Mtumishi said that he ended up in crime after he was forced out of school because his father could no longer pay his school fees.

The comedian was recruited into a gang of carjackers by a friend in Kawangware, the gang only carried out their activities after receiving information on their targets.

Speaking during an interview with Dr. King’ori on The Wicked Edition, Mtumishi said that their gang would receive information from a source he didn’t name before they carried on with their carjacking activities.

“Tulikua na information kama gari iko na doh tunaenda kuicarjack tunanyanganyana, but hatukua tunaua. Personally sikuwai ua, ilikua tu urespect kenye unaona na ufanye kenye tunataka then sisi tuchukue kenye tunachukua tukuache,” said Mtumishi.

Mtumishi further disclosed that he participated in carjacking crimes for two years, revealing that the highest amount the gang had ever stolen was Ksh 5 million. And the highest amount he got for himself from sharing stolen money was Ksh 2 million.

The comedian however noted that even though he used to get so much money from carjacking he never really saved any. He said that he used to live a lavish lifestyle that would see him fly to Mombasa for holiday after a successful carjacking. Mtumishi stated that his flamboyance lifestyle would even see him charter a plane to fly to whatever destination he was heading.

The turning point in Mtumishi’s life in crime came during a carjacking incident on Kiambu Road. The comedian said that the gang mistakenly attempted to steal from the dreaded Flying Squad police unit.

Mtumishi says that only God saved them because the police officers didn’t shoot at them but rather gave them a thorough beating, and warned them that they would kill them next time they meet.

“One day tulicarjack gari ya flying squad hapa Kiambu road, tulimistake number plate. Na Mungu pia huwork vitu zake, it was a point of change pia kwa life yangu. So tukalalishwa chini tukatandikwa na hizi wire za stima,” said Mtumishi.

Mtumishi quit life in crime after the encounter on Kiambu Road, he resorted to doing menial jobs including working as a mortuary barber.
