Comedian Gilbert Baraza popularly known Mtumishi has opened up about working at a mortuary while he was trying to make ends meet.

For starters, Mtumishi shot to fame while working with his partner Mchungaji (real name Josephat Mchasia). The duo scaled the heights of Kenyan comedy when they debuted on Churchill show.

Mtumishi and Mchungaji were both street urchins at one point of their lives.

They used to walk all the way from Kawangware to Carnivore for Churchill Show auditions until their big break came.

The duo is now part of a group called Kreative Generations, a comedy group comprising of 15 members. Mtumishi is the chairman and Mchungaji is the vice-chairman.

In a recent interview with the Nairobian, Mtumishi revealed that working as a barber in a mortuary was one of the most difficult menial jobs he undertook to earn a living.

The comedian disclosed that his turning point came when he shaved his friend’s corpse. He decided to quit the mortuary job altogether and went on to pursue his dream of becoming a comedian.

“I worked as a barber in a mortuary. I used to shave the dead. It was a tough job, though it gave birth to my career. One day, I shaved a friend of mine and that experience really haunted me.

I went back home and did a bit of soul searching. My dream was to be a comedian or actor and I knew, I was not going to die before achieving this.

I decided that I will no longer seek employment but rather, exploit my talent,” said Mtumishi.
