Lon Jon shares his two cents on the play Kenyan music debate

6 mins read

Khaligraph Jones sparked a nationwide debate about Kenyan supporting their own content when he was in Nigeria a few days back when he went there to shoot a music video for ‘Gwala’ record with Ycee and later on went to record yet another record with Ice Prince Zamani whilst there.

The debate made almost everybody on the media to react and some reacted with some positive remarks with others with not so positive remarks on the same matter.

Lon Jon who is a veteran rapper has been in the game for over a decade now as fellow rapper, Xtatic recently shared on social media how far herself, Khaligraph Jones and Lon Jon they have come in the music industry having competed in the same rap competition back in the day dubbed ‘Emcee Africa 2’ back in 2009.

Lon Jon shared his two cents on the matter and shocked in the same light how “we are quick to accept everything foreign and forget about home grown talent.”

“The amount of untapped, undiscovered musical talent in Kenya is insane. Positive criticism can only make Kenyan content creators focus on improving their artform.” Lon Jon said in part on his Instagram account.

Lon Jon who has worked with Khaligraph Jones, ZJ Heno and Kforce and even got to chill with Cassper Nyovest when he was based in South Africa a few years ago stressed how quick we are to forget about our home grown talent but we are eager and ready to support foreign everything even though we have talents in every entertainment industry from Victor Wanyama, Lupita Nyong’o, Collins Injera, Sauti Sol, Khaligraph Jones who are such a big deal.

Lon Jon calls for the industry to be given an opportunity to grow iterating that it all starts from home whether you hate it or love it.

This is what he had to say about Kenyans supporting Kenyan music and Kenyan “everything” through his social media account, Instagram.

He wrote: ” LONG POST ALERT!!

Better late than never with the discussion about Kenyan Media playing and supporting Kenyan music, although others have chosen to focus their energy on what they perceive to be “Bad Music” which to me doesn’t exist but let’s focus. The amount of untapped, undiscovered musical talent in Kenya is insane. Positive criticism can only make Kenyan content creators focus on improving their artform. We are quick to accept everything foreign and forget about home grown talent. We all have seen how far Kenyan artist can take it when given the chance. From @lupitanyongo (Actress) @cinjera (Rugby) @victorwanyama (Soccer) @khaligraph_jones (Rapper) @sautisol (Afro-Pop) to mention a few and all with international accolades. Give the industry the opportunity it needs to grow, It all starts at home, so whether you hate it or love it, playing local content can only help the industry flourish. Be proud of your own and remember the local industry is bigger than what is on main stream media if you looking for content, do your research!

S/O to everyone who has been supporting the movement from before the discussions @joewmuchiri @amina_kenya @corineonyango @mzaziwillytuva @djhypnotiqkenya @poizonivythedj @thecremedelacreme @djjoemfalme only to mention a few

My 2 cents playkemusic #80percentlocalmusic”
