KRG the Don is now the exclusive owner of the phrase ‘mambo imechemka’ having secured a copyright.
This may now start a war between KRG and another group of artistes who released a song titled ‘Mambo Imechemuka.
It seemed that they copied KRG because, on March 7, he also released a song called ‘Mambo Imechemka’.
The patent which KRG has received from the Kenya Industrial Property Institute (KIPI) is likely to raise the questions on who should own ‘mambo imechemka’ catchphrase.
KRG, whose real name is Stephen Karuga Kimani, filed the trademark application on February 10.
In the latest edition of his monthly newsletter, KIPI said that KRG’s request had been granted – but on the condition that he will not have the right to own the word “mambo” alone unless it is accompanied by “imechemka”.
Unless someone files a serious objection within 60 days from the date the notice was published (March 31), the artiste will be granted his trademark certificate, which will be valid for 10 years.
That means no one can use the expression in entertainment circles without express permission from the 32-year-old entertainer.
