Francis Atwoli answered a couple of questions a lot of Kenyans had for him in the Sunday Nation where he answered them honestly without any prejudice whatsoever, he tackled a lot of questions.

Among the many questions that the COTU Secretary-General answered was one question asked by one Mr. Fred Sagala from Eldoret who wanted to know why the country should name a public road in his honor.

“I want to thank the leadership of Nairobi County, under Ann Kananu, for this great honor and recognition of services to the Government of the day, the community, and Workers at large. We will continue offering our unwavering support to the leadership of the County,” Francis Atwoli said on May 27, 2021, when he officially went to see the road named him.

According to Atwoli, he believes there’s nothing wrong whatsoever for the country to honor great women and men when they’re still alive adding that he wasn’t consulted neither was he aware that the process of having a road named after him was in process.

Francis Atwoli who is on a continental assignment in Seychelles where he is meeting the Seychelles Federation of Workers’ Unions officials from the government says that he’s yet to meet the Member of County Assembly(MCA) who pushed for the road to be named after him.

The outspoken Central Organization of Trade Unions SG stressed that he’s known all over the world and doesn’t require any street signage for the entire world to know who he really is saying that the honor is actually an honor to the Kenyan workers, not to him as an individual.

“There’s nothing wrong with honoring great men and women when they are still alive. I have said repeatedly, I was not aware not consulted when the process was one.

I am yet to even meet the MCA who pushed for the road to be renamed after me. But that said, my name is all over the world and one doesn’t require a street signage for them to know who Francis Atwoli is. Don’t look at this gesture as an honor to Atwoli as a person, it is an honor to Kenyan workers,” Francis Atwoli said.

The Francis Atwoli road sign in the upmarket Kileleshwa neighborhood in Nairobi has been vandalized in the past and it wasn’t vandalized which as a ripple effect caused the road sign to a 24/7 security after the second vandalization.

“Bringing down an honorary road signage under my name doesn’t hurt me. On the flip side, it will haunt, for life, those who are behind it. For how does it benefit them? How do you sleep at night knowing you are a vandal?
My name is all over the world and one doesn’t require a street signage for them to know who Francis Atwoli is. The name will live in posterity taking into account my years of selfless service to the workers in Kenya and the world.
If anything, the signage was just an act of honor bestowed to me by Nairobians taking into account my many years of service,” his full statement released on June 15, 2021 read.
