Tanzanian rapper Darassa has revealed that he was swindled money generated by his songs while speaking during an interview with Jalang’o after landing in Nairobi.

Darassa is in Kenya for a media tour, he is also doing some music projects with Kenyan artistes.

The Bongo rapper while speaking to Jalang’o lamented about how has not made much money from his songs.

He boasts of major hit songs like ‘Muziki’ which shot him to fame. Darassa explained that he didn’t make money from his songs because of the contracts he signed with distributors and other entities meant to collect revenue from his music.

“Kulikua na contracts zinaendelea kwenye ule wakati na madistributors na watu ambao tuliingiana nao kwa ajili ya shows so kukawa na kinachofanyika kwetu sisi hakitupi faida, hakitupi maisha. Walituzidi akili kwenye contracts zetu za kwanza. So ilikua mbaya kwetu,” said Darassa.

Darassa also stated that he is in Nairobi because he wants to strike a deal with Safaricom to pay him directly for revenues generated from SKIZA ring back tone.

The Bongo singer revealed that the person who he entrusted to collect money from his SKIZA ring back tone had not given him any report from 2015, meaning that he was swindled all the money he earned from 2015.

“Ata hivyo moja kati ya sababu zimenileta Nairobi ni vitu kama hizo. You understand wimbo kama ‘Muziki’ selling yake sijawai kutana na any profit ya hizi ringtone back kama hapa kuna Safaricom wangu na wamefanya kazi na diary wangu ambaye hajawai kunipa repoti ambayo natakiwa kupewa since 2015,” Darassa lamented.

He said that he doesn’t understand really how he is not earning money from his music, noting that most of the income he gets comes from other business he does in Tanzania.
