Cyrus Jirongo has had a storied career as a politician coming up in the ranks as one of Moi’s young Turks. He has also been reputed to be one of the wealthiest of politicians in the country. But things took a turn for the worse for him when he started having issues with his businesses a la Kenneth Matiba.
So the past few years have not been a being a glorious time for Cyrus Jirongo. The recent repeat elections highlight how far he has fallen. The election laws stipulate that for him to be put on the ballot for the presidency he had to prove sure that his financial house was in order. That was clearly an issue as he had to go to court to ensure that bankruptcy proceedings against him would be suspended. His request was approved, and his name was ultimately included in the poll.
Fast forward to election day on Thursday, October 26 and The United Democratic Party candidate had not arrived at his polling station in Lumakanda township by 5 pm. The polls eventually closed in his absence. It is still unclear why Jirongo did not come out to cast his vote despite aggressively fighting to be on the ballot. Very fishy indeed.
This is surely a puzzling occurrence. You fight so hard to be put on the ballot but you do not avail yourself to vote for yourself. This thing does not pass the smell test. FooFooFoo!
I will let my readers who are much smarter than I, surmise why Mr. Jirongo so desperately wanted his name on the ballot but he himself still did not materialize on D-Day.
