Yohji Yamamoto was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1943. After graduating from Keio University with a degree in law in 1966, he entered Bunkafukuso Gakuin Design School and graduated in 1969, in which he began is outstanding career as one of fashion’s top designers.
Yohji began Y’s, his first Women’s collection, in 1972. By 1977 he was conducting fashion shows in Tokyo. Y’s Menswear collection made its debut in 1979 – in addition to Women’s. The designer continued his career with the creation of his signature line, Yohji Yamamoto, was created in 1981 beginning with Women’s wear. He showed that same year for the first time at Paris Fashion Week. New York Fashion week followed in 1982. The first Men’s collection – Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme – made its debut during Paris Fashion week in 1984.
In addition to his multiple fashion lines responsibilities, Yohji once again broke outside the box designing costumes for Operas such as Madame Butterfly, Tristan & Isolde and Susanoo Operas from 1990-1994. The year 1995 brought the release of Yohji Yamamoto + Noir: a collection that is based on Men’s classic, timeless silhouettes and pieces from the signature Yohji Yamamoto line.
1996 brought on Yohji Yamamoto’s Femme collection in New York. October 2002 saw the birth of the most influential cooperation in sport and fashion to date with the launch of the 2003 Spring/Summer Y-3 Men’s and Women’s collection. The “Y” stands for Yohji Yamamoto, the “3” represents adidas’ three signature stripes and the “-” signifies the link between the two.
The collaboration between renowned Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and the authentic sports brand adidas has revolutionized the industry, creating a new category in fashion. Y-3 represents design, true craftsmanship, and the future in sportswear.
