Kiernan Forbes alias AKA’s daughter Kairo Owethu Forbes was inconsolable a couple of times during a memorial service for her father.

AKA’s memorial service was held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday afternoon February 17, 2023.

Kairo, who was sitting with her mom DJ Zinhle in the jam-packed hall, cried several times as people eulogized her father with touching speeches.

AKA’s memorial was a more of a celebration of life than a day of mourning.  A mix of a studio session, with a concert mixed in, a nostalgic listen to some of his past work and his parents singing and rapping along to each and every song.

Lynn Forbes, his mom, gave a heartwarming tribute to her son and asked the mourners to remember her late son.

“I had a simple plan, and it was to have two sons. I got them, Tony and I had these beautiful children, Stephen and Kiernan. But there’s a saying that when you become a mother, you see your heart walking outside your body. But I’m in trouble.

“Everyone that’s walked on this stage is now a son. Now my heart is all over the place, they are guarding me, from the back, from the side, all of them. If you are under 55, you are my child. I’m blessed beyond measure, I look at this room, the Megacy.”

“As a mother that has had a child taken away from me, from the world, from you, so violently, so callously, he was taken out in cold blood. I have a responsibility towards his people, his fans, that supported him for almost two decades. Two decades of Supa Mega.”

“Today a week ago, my heart was shattered into countless pieces. But from today, it will not be just about me, my family, friends, but the Megacy, as our broader family. I believe that is what Kiernan would have wanted, he belonged to all of us. He took the flag onto the stage wherever he went,” she said.

There was complete silence in the room as she spoke and tears started flowing.

“Kiernan’s body has been taken from this world in the most brutal way, I understand that you must be feeling the same amount of anger, pain and in a state of absolute disbelief. All these emotions are normal human emotions and I want you to feel them. But I want you to be in control of how you manage them.”
