AKA has come forward to set the record straight about his collaboration deal with Reebok that saw his collab show that he dubbed SneAKA become an instant classic to sneakerheads.

The rapper who has his hands busy in almost everything that’s bringing him money –from apps, business, music, apparel, and most recently a club– sat down for a recent interview with SABC 3’s TrendingSA where he opened up in detail about the deal.

AKA real name Kiernan Jarryd Forbes shocked netizens back in May 2020 where the rapper shared on Twitter that he wasn’t paid for his SneAKA deal.

What the rapper meant is totally different from what the fans understood, and the ‘Starsigns’ hitmaker came forward to explain why that is.

“First of all with the Reebok deal, I made back a lot of bank. I made millions of rands, so let’s clear that up.

What I said was, I didn’t get a royalty for the sneaker that I designed.” AKA said after he was asked about the hard lessons he had learned after his deal with Reebok.

AKA stressed that what he wasn’t paid on the deal was royalties for the design that he designed together with his brother came up with for the SneAKA sneakers.

Otherwise, he made millions out of the ambassadorial deal.

“So I was in an ambassadorial role for Reebok South Africa, I really brought the brand to a different level.

Made my own sneaker which was a dream of mine,” AKA went on.

AKA went on to add the reason why he chose not to pursue working with them anymore and why he’s not representing them anymore or any of their products today.

All AKA wanted was royalties off the product that he designed together with his brother, Nicky Heat.

“And for me one of the reasons I didn’t pursue going forward and why I’m not with them anymore is because I wanted a royalty off of the product that myself and my brother had designed,” AKA explained why he didn’t continue working with Reebok anymore thereafter.

The sports brand said they fulfilled all contractual obligations and were very disappointed in AKA’s actions.

Reebok rolled out limited AKA’s SneAKA sneakers to the market which sold out like hotcakes, Megacy were actually in a queue to get a pair or two of the now-soldout shoe.

Mid last year, AKA’s SneAKA sneakers caused a commotion after a fan brought to his attention that his shoe now cost R20,000 on the Cool Online Sneakers and Urban Wear Store.
