7 mins read

Kenya as a country is on the verge of becoming one of the best notable African countries to put our talented rappers in the hip hop realm, especially after rappers like Kforce, Octopizzo, Khaligraph Jones, Nyashinski, King Kaka and Naiboi continue to put Kenya on the map with their records.

That being said, there’s a new generation of upcoming talented rappers who are the future of Kenyan hip hop and rap and they will be in no shadow of doubt a force to reckon with in the next few months to few upcoming years since hip hop and rap will live through them by picking up the mantle from the current mainstream rappers.

Here are the top six Kenyan rappers that should be on your radar because they are the next big thing in the rap game.

Breeder LW

Though he has been in the music industry for a while as an underground rapper, Breeder LW made a statement as a serious artiste of rap last year where he got to work with the legendary Kforce in one of his records off his debut LP dubbed ‘Kabla Kuosa’.

Breeder LW has since remained to be one of the Kenyan prolific rappers in the rap game today by releasing hits after hits with visuals simultaneously.

It’s only a matter of time before he hits the mainstream as a bonafide, serious and talented rapper that everybody should take note of. Wait and see, just give him a couple of months before he gets his mainstream big break.

Kapella

In case you didn’t notice, Kapella is a former one-half member of the once dominating dynamic duo rap group called  Coola Gang together with Taffie (who has since changed his name to Cooli and he’s now a part of another group called CooliHaze together with Yung Haze )that has since disbanded.

It’s safe to say that Kapella has done well for himself as a solo rapper and he has been trying the best way he can to bring up other rappers who are trying to break out from solely being independent underground rap group.

Kapella has been releasing records for the longest time now and they are making a statement on the streets and he also brought out different talented upcoming rappers on his recently released cypher dubbed ‘Exclusive Cypher’

Boutross Munene

Boutross Munene who goes by his mononym was officially introduced on the mainstream market together with Barak Jacuzzi after they were featured by Octopizzo on his hit record dubbed ‘Tergat Gang’ that was released a few years back.

Boutross who is currently in a rap group called ‘AD Family’ together with Kay Green and Dope I Mean is gradually making a name for himself as a bonafide rapper everybody should take notice of. Last year alone he released one solo project dubbed ‘Billy Jean’ together with a collaborative project with Kay Green and Jovie Jovv dubbed ‘Turn A Hobby to a Job’.

Maandy

I believe Maandy is bringing the competition in the rap game for the women rappers already accomplished in the game.

Though we have rappers like Stella Mwangi, Petra, Fena Gitu, Femi One, Wangechi, just to mention a few established female rappers, Maandy brings something new in the hip hop and rap “table” and she’s committed in making it big in the music business, and the best thing about it all is that she has her mother’s blessing to succeed as a rapper.

Kay Green

Kay Green stands out with his unique sound, especially his voice and he comes with bars in almost all of his records he puts out. The rapper is also a part of AD Family and he also released his project last year just like Boutross and Dope I Mean.

All members of AD Family go hard in the rap game today and Kay Green makes rapping look so easy, if you haven’t listened to him yet, you ought to listen to his project dubbed ‘Planet Green’ and I promise you that you will be an instant fan, just like that.

Jovie Jovv

Jovie Jovv might as well be the Kenyan “Future” since he is an all round artiste, he is not just good with creative verses and bars, he’s also good with hooks and arguably there’s no rapper in the game today who is the go-to guy when it comes to doing hooks, maybe TwennyEights comes close.

Jovie Jovv is not only a versatile rapper, he is also a prolific one and he proved that by releasing his highly anticipated project dubbed ‘Molly Heights’ which he released when he was still occupied with other projects like ‘Turn a Hobby To A Job’ and also working with TnT on some of their records.

Jovie Jovv who recently released his first record of 2019 dubbed ‘Kibare Kwa Face’ is on his way to the upper echelon of hip hop and rap in the country and probably beyond that. Just wait and see.
