5 Kenyan drill music acts that are taking over the industry

9 mins read

Drill music has inevitably found a home in the Kenyan music industry, it’s safe to say that it’s the next big thing in the country in terms of genre.

Almost every other artiste out there; established or otherwise have released a drill song recently and nobody can blame them for it.

Drill music is taking over and helping shape the music industry in Kenya as we know it in the hip hop genre.

With this new genre that ruthlessly displaced the original Kenyan sound Gengetone by a mile or two has seen a new crop of new artistes emerging to stardom from complete oblivion which is good for the country since it’s giving out opportunities to upcoming artistes thus creating employment and aiding youth to do what they love doing and that’s churning out new music every other day.

At the moment, Wakadinali has owned the drill music scene, there’s no way anybody can trample them in this genre. They are so good that one of their members called Sewersydaa changed his other unofficial moniker to Man A Driller to drive that point home.

Drill music is the future, and everybody knows this; fans, critics even rappers. It’s an inevitable force that cannot be denied her opportunity to shine in the music industry in Kenya.

These are the top 5 music acts in no particular order that are making a name for themselves as drillers in the Kenyan music industry today.

Big Yasa is a new face in the music industry today having released one of the hottest tracks released in Kenya that’s considered a drill.

Despite being in the game for a while, he has earned his stripes as one of the prospects poised to take the genre which is relatively new in the Kenyan scene to the next unprecedented levels.

His hit record dubbed ‘Mazza’ that features Kombat proves that he’s about to be a force to reckon with in the music industry in the near future irrespective of the genre.

With artistes like Big Yasa in the music scene, there’s no doubt that not only the drill scene but the music scene as we know it is in best hands, figuratively speaking.

It’s no secret that Buruklyn Boyz is the new kid on the block in the Kenyan music industry today.

The group that comprises of Ajay and Mr Right have been in the music industry for not more than 3 years but they’ve made a name for themselves in the mainstream music scene which is somewhat unprecedented all things considered.

The group came out owning the music scene with their drill sound with their hit record dubbed ‘Nairobi’ which has since become an anthem in Kenya.

If you need any convincing that they are a prospect, just listen to any of their records, don’t let my words convince you about their prospect, let the music do the convincing for you.

Drill music will forever continue to make sense in the music space in Kenya if these two rappers are a part of the Kenyan drill music.

Kayvo Kforce

Kayvo Kforce is an OG in the music industry having earned his stripes in the music industry for the many years he’s hold down hip hop. For crying out loud, he even has a song specifically tailored for hip hop dubbed ‘Napenda hip hop’ that you should blast in your car, home, chill-spot even at your church if you roll like that.

The veteran rapper who is nothing but positive vibes and all about the positive music he churns out recently proved without any provocation whatsoever that he’s not only an OG in the rap game but he’s also a versatile rapper who can literally own any beats placed before him and the beats that he owned was for drill.

Kayvo Kforce didn’t only release one drill song but released an entire album dubbed ‘Namba Nane Drill’ as homage to the ever-popular drill sound that’s taking over the country with its popularity.

If you are sleeping on Kayvo Kforce, you shouldn’t and if you need any convincing, just stream any song plucked from his hit studio project ‘Namba Nane Drill’. Be sure to thank me later afterwards.

Wakadinali

It must be considered an insult if anyone right now doesn’t know who Wakadinali is in the Kenyan music industry. The group has paid their dues as a collective music group and earned their stripes as individual music acts.

The group comprise of Sewersydaa, Domani Munga and Scar have been dominant in the music industry for years and they have been doing this as underground artistes.

It’s only recently that they got a taste of mainstream music which the group loved and since then, they have maintained that status of not only being a mainstream music group but also answer to being underground artistes despite their success.

That notwithstanding, Wakadinali are quickly becoming synonymous to drill music in Kenya today and their catalog speaks volume on this, you don’t need to be convinced otherwise.

Every drill record they churn out becomes an instant hit without even trying hard to push it, it’s all organic, the fan love is organic, the reception is organic, the good vibes is organic, even the positive perpetuated feedback is organic.

Wakadinali group is made of nothing but GOATs.

Silverstone Barz’s name is quickly becoming synonymous to good quality Kenyan music thanks to her consistency, her tenacity, her hard work and her determination to become a better rapper today than she was yesterday.

The beautiful, outspoken, and talented rapper has since embraced drill music and she’s never looked back. Granted, she can as quickly pick up a new sound if she needs to since she’s versatile and all but occasionally she indulges herself by jumping on drill music projects where she annihilates the drill beat/s.

It’s only a matter of time before she becomes bigger than herself not only in the hip hop scene in Kenya but in the drill music where she’s gradually but inevitably about to own and dominate.

Silverstone Barz can easily convince you to love drill music even if you were not a fan prior to listening to her rap over some random drill beats, that should tell you something about her.
