The suspects who attacked Baby Sagini wanted the innocent boy dead. The inhumanely gouged out his eyes and then dumped him in a maize plantation after believing he was dead.
It is reported that fears that Baby Sagini, a stepson in the family, would inherit property left to him, in the future and become a beneficiary of communal land was the reason behind the attack.
“Sagini’s attackers stuffed him in a sack before taking him to an unknown location where they gouged out his eyes before dumping him in a maize farm, thinking he was dead,” a detective involved in the case has revealed.
Baby Sagini luckily survived, and was rescued after he was found in pain crying. His body and clothes were all soaked with blood after the act of animosity.
According to Sagini’s grandmother in her testimony to the police, “They did not want Baby Sagini to inherit the family land in the case that his stepfather [who’s unwell] died.”
In her statement to detectives in Kisii, Sagini’s grandmother, Rael Nyakerario, described the circumstances surrounding the fatal attack that left Sagini blind. She claimed that Pacifica Nyakerario, her daughter-in-law, and her son, Alex Ochogo, planned to kill the infant Sagini, who was thought to be the only heir to his stepfather’s estate.
Although the size of the property is unknown, it is a contentious subject in Kisii, where hundreds have been hurt or killed as a result.
Kisii culture has always reserved the right to inherit land for boys and men.
According to sources, Rael Nyakerario had two sons, Sagini’s s dad and the Ochogo’s.
Ochogo’s dad, who was also Pacificah Nyakerario’s husband, passed away in an unclear circumstances years ago.
Thomas Ongaga, Sagini’s father, is the sole male living at the homestead at the moment and he is sadly ill.
