On 13th August 2019, Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) disbursed royalties to musicians via M-Pesa, most artistes were each paid Ksh 2,530 as their two months earnings.
“We have distributed royalties to all our members (13,967) general distribution. Its PPP distribution (Performance in Public Places) this are collections from public places for only 2 months. Please Note that we haven’t received a dime from any broadcasters who exploit music,” MCSK said in a tweet that was later deleted.
The meagre payment from MCSK sparked uproar from many artistes who felt cheated. The likes of Khaligraph Jones and King Kaka openly protested the payments.

Khaligraph went on to mock MCSK for paying him Ksh 2,530. The rapper revealed how he spent the money sent to him in a satirical post.
He shared a photo showing a cup of tea and two KDF (buns) and went on to say that he used the money from MCSK to buy himself breakfast.
“Today is Payday, Lol, this is What Artists are Having for Dinner courtesy of MCSK alafu mnashindwa mbona wengine wamekonda, Sauti sol Sitawachokoza Tena, naelewa sasa,” wrote Khaligraph Jones.
