Anne Soy and her husband Newton Ndebu were on Friday October 11th arrested by police at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) after they attended the ongoing House Expo.

Soy took to Twitter to narrate her ordeal in a series of tweets. She revealed that she was stopped by officers who demanded to check their bags on suspicious that they had stolen laptops.

“Currently under arrest at the KICC POLICE STATION with my kids. Had attended the Homes Expo and asked why security officers were checking bags as we exited. Was told they check if we’ve stolen laptops,” Anne Soy tweeted.

The BBC journalist and her husband were later arrested after they questioned the manner in which the security team was searching them.

“I said I’d paid to get in and hadn’t stolen anything and it’s escalated quickly. Still trying to understand why I’m under arrest with my kids,” Soy tweeted.

Soy revealed that her husband and her were finally released after KICC CEO Nana Gecaga intervened and resolved the issue quickly.

“A quick update to say we’re all out now and are on our way home. We’ll debrief the kids before posting further details. Big thank you to @NanaGecaga for intervening and resolving the matter swiftly. Thanks for all your messages. We’ll respond to them whenever we can.”

In another tweet, Soy said that arrest was not as bad as it looked. She revealed that they sat on swinging leather seats and even offered mineral water while they were in police custody.

“I must add that the arrest wasn’t as bad as it looks. We sat on swinging leather seats and were offered mineral water towards the end. It’s luxury compared to elsewhere on the continent where I’ve been arrested before.”
