Suzanna Owiyo’s music career saw her perform at the Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert in London and win several accolades globally but in spite of all that she still sells fish.
The Afro Fusion singer insists that it is important to have multiple sources of income to thrive in the entertainment industry.
Speaking on Citizen Digital’s Twitter Space, Owiyo said she sells fish as a side hustle to supplement the funds she makes from her music career.
“People often ask me why I still sell fish to date… the Covid-19 pandemic made me think otherwise and realise that you cannot just depend on music. During lockdowns, we were stuck at home, there were no shows to perform at,” she said.
Owiyo is currently the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
She said she decided to take up the challenge and learn about what it entailed and that even enabled her to start the Soko Bila Waste initiative which sensitises the public on reducing food wastage.
The ‘Kisumu Ber’ singer is an accomplished singer globally.
The highlight of her music career came in 2008 when she performed at the Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday concert in London and performed again at the WOMEX festival.
In 2011 she was awarded the prestigious Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya from the late President Mwai Kibaki in recognition for her global achievements and efforts through music.
