Sauti Sol has read the riot act to the Music Copyright Society Of Kenya (MCSK) after it paid musicians peanuts as royalties in its latest distribution.
The band’s lead singer Bien was the first to raise the alarm over the money he received as royalties collected from his music.
Sauti Sol lead singer Bien was the first to post his M-Pesa statement which shows that he was paid Ksh14,634 by the society.
Bien wondered what ‘upcoming’ musicians like Khaligraph Jones were paid if he could be paid a meagre Ksh14,634.
“Let the weekend begin. I’M RICH B*TCH!!!!! Where the h*es at. We balling out of control this weekend. Your number 1 artist has been paid royalties. I can only imagine what upcoming artists like @khaligraph_jones are getting. DM with today’s plan.” Bien wrote.
Following the pay row drama, Sauti Sol jointly issued a statement threatening to withdraw their membership from MCSK.
The band on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, said MCSK no longer serves their interest.
“We are going to withdraw our membership from the Music Copyright Society Of Kenya (MCSK) as it does not serve our best interests entirely. The royalties collected are NOT their direct income but yours. They are working for you! Take back your power!” Sauti Sol said.
The group further implored fellow disgruntled musicians to follow in their footsteps to withdraw MCSK membership.
“All disgruntled members who wish to do the same, the time is now! Please reach out. Take back your power!” Sauti Sol said.
