The year 2019 has really started off on a bad start after Africa lost the legendary Oliver Mtukudzi a few days back and as if that’s not enough, death had to take one of Kenyan greats, Ayub Ogada in the music industry adored not only in Kenya but across the globe.
Ayub Ogada was a revered and respected musician who release a record ‘Koth Biro’ that surpassed the expectation anyone might have placed on the record that was released on the record couple of years ago.
Ayub Ogada who was born in Mombasa in 1956 is dead, sadly, and messages of condolences have been streaming online ever since everybody got wind of his passing.
Many might not know but Ayub Ogada who was synonymous to his Nyatiti instrument was a living legend living a quiet life before his passing. Ayub Ogada’s song, ‘Koth Biro’ has been covered by almost everyone in every corner of the world.
Taking to social media, Suzanna Owiyo admittedly confessed that Ayub Ogada was the reason she picked up Nyatiti in the first place.
She wrote: “Ayub Ogada,respect Wuod Luo! You are the reason I picked up Nyatiti. Thank you for sharing this fantastic 8 strings instrument with the world. I celebrate you! Rest in Power”

Once, when I was a more fearless artist, I got to jam with Ayub Ogada. What we shared then, several artists being open, vulnerable and free has always stuck with me. He spoke strongly about his energy, about trusting his gut and his instinct and I never forgot that.
