Rwandan gospel singer struggles with homophobia shortly after coming out as gay

Popular Rwandan gospel singer Albert Nabonibo made headlines across the world when he came out as gay on August 26th 2019.

Rwandan law does not outlaw gay acts but same-sex marriages are not permitted and most churches in the predominant Christian country consider homosexuality a taboo.

Albert became the first gospel singer in Rwanda to come out as gay, this explains that fuss about his sexuality. The 35 year old had hidden his sexuality all along until August 26th 2019 when he told a Christian YouTube channel that he is gay.

From the moment Albert publicly announced that he is gay, the musician was flooded with insults from fans and was also shunned by friends.

In a recent interview with BBC Great Lakes service, Albert revealed that he was sacked from his accountancy job in Kigali two weeks after coming out as gay.

“I was good at my job, but when fellow employees saw the story they started hating me, then my bosses pushed me to resign,” said Albert.

Albert now has to deal with homophobia which is flourishing in all facets of Rwandan society, he no longer goes to his church because of harassment.

“I am afraid, I am not free as before, but I wish my society could understand,” said Albert.
