Rema’s song ‘Calm Down’ remix with Selena Gomez has become the number one hit on the Official MENA Chart.

Signed under Nigeria’s Mavin record label, young rapper Rema topped the charts with his hit song which is a club banger world over.

The singer has been steadily rising in popularity since his debut, relying on a large number of fans and gaining international fame.

At the time of writing, ‘Calm Down’ had nearly 400 million streams on Spotify, while its remix with American artist Selena Gomez received 717 million streams on the music platform overnight.

The international single 2022 made history when it climbed to the top of The Official MENA Chart, shortly after the launch of the chart itself.

The song – the second lead single from Rema’s debut album, Rave & Roses – talks about the singer’s pursuit of love.

At the party, the singer meets a girl wearing a yellow dress that is visible from others and decides to try to approach her.

The song garnered several nominations and topped the international charts, reaching the Top 3 in Belgium, France, Portugal and the Netherlands (among other countries).

In 2023, a remix featuring Selena was nominated at the Global Awards as Best Social Song.

On 29 November 2022, the IFPI (Federation of the Phonographic Industry) announced that the song was the first ever to top the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) music streaming chart.

The recently launched Official MENA Chart is a regional platform where “music fans will be able to celebrate the best streaming songs every week with the top 20 regional hits.”

Announced every Thursday, the weekly Top 20 gathers data from 13 MENA countries, covering a combined population of more than 300 million people.

The markets monitored by the platform are Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition, the regional chart monitors all major streaming platforms at all times: from YouTube to Deezer, Spotify and Apple Music, the service aims to be as inclusive as possible.
