American rapper and actor Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, was arrested in Romania and charged with illegal drug possession while headlining the “Beach, Please!” festival in the seaside resort of Costinesti.

According to reports from Agence France Presse (AFP), authorities discovered cannabis in Khalifa’s possession in the early hours of Sunday, July 14.

Cannabis is classified as a “risk drug” under Romanian law, and if convicted, the 36-year-old artist could face up to 10 years in prison.

The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecutors organization DIICOT stated that Khalifa not only possessed over 18 grams of cannabis but also smoked a handmade cannabis cigarette onstage during his performance.

“During a performance at a music festival held in the resort of Costinesti, the accused was found to have possessed more than 18 grams of cannabis and to have consumed (onstage) another quantity in the form of a handmade cigarette,” DIICOT said in a statement.

Local authorities detained Khalifa for questioning along with several other individuals early on Sunday. He was charged but released shortly thereafter.

Following his release, Wiz Khalifa took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to address the incident.

He expressed his appreciation for the Romanian authorities’ respectful treatment and acknowledged his mistake. “Last night’s show was amazing.

I didn’t mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage,” he wrote.

“They were very respectful and let me go. I’ll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”

The arrest has garnered significant attention, adding to the ongoing discussion about drug laws and enforcement in various countries.

Despite the legal repercussions, Khalifa’s fans continue to show support for the artist, who is known for his outspoken advocacy of cannabis use.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact Wiz Khalifa’s future performances and engagements in countries with strict drug laws.
