Moses Wetang’ula has launched his presidential bid at a ceremony skipped by Cord leader Raila Odinga.
The chaotic ceremony at Muliro gardens was disrupted for nearly half an hour as police lobbed teargas at the main dais forcing the leaders to be whisked away.
Two people were seriously injured and rushed to hospital after a stampede as people scampered for safety.
Unconfirmed reports allege that Raila shelved his plans to attend the event after “intelligence” warned him of the clashes between Ford Kenya and ODM supporters.
Ford K supporters tored and burnt ODM t-shirts and caps in protest that the ceremony was their party affair.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka linked the teargassing of the main dais to a “well-schemed plan” by Jubilee to try and divide Cord ahead of 2017.
“I want to tell the Jubilee shame on you. How dare you lob teargas at a very peaceful event like this? How shameless are you to teargas old and respected men like Burudi Nabwera?,”Kalonzo posed.
He said Cord will remain intact and clinch the Presidency in 2017.
Kalonzo said plot by Jubilee to divide Cord will fail.
Wetang’ula outlined his plans for the country as it’s Chief Executive and condemned the chaos.
“You cannot stop an idea whose time has come. You can never stand in the way of such an idea. The time is now,” Wetang’ula said amid applause from the crowd.
He pointed out that the Cord leadership will remain united despite Jubilee plots against it.
Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar confirmed Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s fears that the ceremony would be used as a platform to endorse Senator Bonny Khalwale’s gubernatorial candidature.
Omar said; “I will come back again at this historic ground to attend Khalwale’s launch.”.
Omar has equally declared his interest in Mombasa Governor seat against ODMs Hassan Joho.
Omar told Amani leader Musalia Mudavadi to join Cord before it is too late for him.
“Mudavadi should watch this multitude and join us before it is too late,” he said.
Khalwale said Cord will remain intact and win the 2017 polls.
