Kenyan security organisations are closely monitoring opposition leader Raila Odinga.
This is because they believe Raila Odinga is working to create an Arab spring type of revolution where he would use social media to call on the youth to help him overthrow the government.
Raila’s kikao meetings that attract thousands of youth are also being closely monitored because ‘the real agenda is being hidden by the event organisers’.
This is because security organsations in the country believe Raila Odinga is planning a revolution similar to the Arab spring that toppled several presidents in Arab nations.
According to the Star, after Raila Odinga held his first kikao in Mombasa county, having attracted 5,000 youth to the forum, the event’s organisers were approached by the DCI for questioning despite it remaining unclear if any crime had been committed.
In the Mombasa event, Governor Hassan Joho then dished out KSh 100 million worth of bursaries to students at the event. Raila’s second kikao in Kakamega attracted 4,000 youth.
However, ODM insiders told the newspaper that the meetings were a means for Raila to connect with youth who were born in the year 1990 on wards because they have no idea about Raila’s political ideologies.
“Two organisers were asked about the intention of the forums. But to us it is a continuation of political intimidation. The government is scared that it has lost ground and cannot secure re-election in 2017,” said a source as quoted in the Star.
The next forums are scheduled to take place in Kisii, Nyamira and Kilifi as other strongholds prepare for the launch of Raila’s presidential campaign launch.
“ODM is advocating for youth empowerment, fighting ethnicity as well as championing our political ideology in the youth. Those who have cellphones and have access to the internet should interact with us,” said Raila Odinga at a past kikao.
In these meetings, Raila Odinga has been discrediting President Uhuru Kenyatta’s leadership which is why Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery tagged them as coup plotters.
This came after a university student linked two ODM leaders to a coup plot after they tried to recruit him to join them.
They included ODM Nairobi chairman George Aladwa and Simba Arati. Raila’s former chief of staff Caroli Omondi was also said to be on the police radar.
The two were taken into police custody on Tuesday, June 21, for questioning.
“People think Kenya is a very weak country and you can repeat what happened in Libya and Egypt. These CORD fellows are planning a revolution and the government will not allow it,” said Nkaissery.
Arab spring evidenced how social media played a huge role in the dissemination of information that led to the fall of several country leaders.
Most of the countries had to ban access to the internet as a measure of controlling the uprising and rebuilding the country after a series of violent and fatal demonstrations.
