One more person was injured and taken to hospital.
Police on Tuesday said the crash occurred at 00.20am near Lukenya on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway as the five headed home.
They said the officers in a Nissan Tiida saloon car died when their vehicle collided head-on with a Toyota Land Cruisier that was overtaking another vehicle.
Dr Mutua sent condolences to the families and friends of officers attached to his office.
“We pray to the Almighty God to comfort the families of our departed colleagues and give us all the strength to bear the loss, ” he said in a statement issued to the media by his press secretary Mutinda Mwanzia.
“Some of the officers had spent the day with me during my very busy trip to Yatta sub-county on Monda.”
Mutua said the vehicle the officers were travelling in had just dropped off one of his assigned bodyguards and was heading to drop the other officers to their homes when the accident occurred.
“This is a very sad occurrence because we all work and treat each other as family. Improvement of our infrastructure and lighting are critical in minimising road accidents in our nation,” he said.
