You probably knew Philip Etemesi through his erotic stories dubbed ‘Etemesi’s Tales.’ Or maybe you knew him from his hilarious entertainment articles at Ghafla two years ago. Perhaps you knew him recently when he started writing for the Daily Nation.
Whether you knew him now or a long time ago, I am sure you are glad that you discovered this amazing writer. Etemesi is a beast. He is quite explicit but very entertaining and humorous.
That’s what makes him unique. He is not like all these other young Kenyan writers who all write the same way because they are trying so hard to be Bikozulu.
Etemesi is his own man.
Most recently, he surprised us all by announcing he was releasing his first book. The book finally dropped last week and I was among the first people to get it. I ordered and it was delivered to me by a young lady who was very humble. The novel is called ‘The Fornicator’ (what a name) and it has a beautiful cover too. It is big but I finished it in two days only.
This is because it was impossible to put it down. When you start reading, you keep wanting to know what happens next.
I don’t want to give any spoilers but the way the sex scenes are written makes 50 Shades of Grey look like a kindergarten storybook. The dude knows how to describe sexual acts. If he markets this book well, it could be a worldwide hit.
No kidding. I have a feeling that white people would go crazy over it.
And it’s very relatable too. The setting is in Nairobi even though some of the action takes place in Western Kenya and in South America as well. It’s something that both the ordinary person, who isn’t really fond of reading and the deep literature lover will enjoy.
When you read the book, entertainment isn’t the only thing you get. If you’ve read his dating articles, you know that Etemesi is good at teaching relationship concepts too.
In the book, he occasionally teaches you things through the eyes and experiences of the characters. There are themes such as the sponsor phenomenon, true love, single-motherhood, STIs, corruption, family feuds, politics, heartbreak, murder, and betrayal.
By reading it, you can tell that the author really put his heart and soul into the book. Most authors write to look like good writers but Etemesi writes to give the reader a good time.
I am itching to tell you some of the things that happened but again, it wouldn’t be nice of me to give spoilers.
If I am to rate this book out of ten, I give it a score of 9.5/10.
