According to the Chief Officer Special Programs, Beth Karimi, the initiative will be rolled out in May this year with an aim of engaging the boy child ‘who seemed to have been neglected’.
The Nyeri County Government has proposed a budgetary allocation of Sh800,000 to purchase underwear for primary school boys in the county.
“For a beginning we are going to have roughly Sh800,000…so that we get 33,000 pieces,” Karimi stated.
The Special Programs Officer indicated that they would give the boys two or three pieces each in order to improve their hygiene.
“This is also way of encouraging them to know that if we give them three they can be able to take a daily bath,” Karimi added.
The underwear project will be carried out alongside the sanitary towel initiative for girls with a focus to cater for both genders.
The budget proposal has been presented before the County Assembly awaiting approval, prior to the project’s implementation in the county.
In the 2016-2017 Nyeri budget proposal, the County Government suggested increased funding for Education, ICT and Special Programmes that would take care of the underwear provision.
