Njambi Koikai has narrated her experience with her first menstrual period while revealing how she came to discover she was suffering from endometriosis.
Njambi has been battling thoracic endometriosis for two decades, she recently returned home from America where she was hospitalized for one and a half year.
The popular media personality discovered she was suffering from endometriosis after she got her first period. She experienced excruciating pain whenever she received her periods.
“I first got my period some 20 years ago on a Kenya Bus on my way to school. Worst day of my life. I alighted at Ambassadeur stage, crossed over to Kencom and went back home. I was sweating heavily, it felt like a hacksaw with acid was cutting through my stomach, couldn’t stand straight. Ran to the bathroom and realised my period had started. That was the beginning of a long 19 years with a disease known as Endometriosis,” wrote Njambi Koikai in part.
Njambi spoke on her experience with first period after she attended Koroga Festival. She says that she met many women at the festival who opened up to her about their battle with endometriosis.
“I met so many women who shared their endo battles with me at Koroga Festival. I love y’all for being so courageous. I’m happy to see more women coming out and speaking of their experiences. The more we speak, the more we are heard. Btw, this disease affects women at any age. Some get it after childbirth, others from the onset of menstruation, others in their mid twenties etc. We have to keep talking about it and ensuring that all women can access quality healthcare. We must find a cure,” wrote Njambi.
