Rising rapper Ngesh, who gained popularity with her hit song “Kaveve Kazoze,” has ignited controversy with her latest release, “Zimeriet,” as part of the Spider Clan hip hop group.
The song, which premiered on YouTube on July 1, 2024, has drawn significant backlash from members of the Luhya community.
In her verse, Ngesh makes a provocative statement, claiming that the behinds of Luhya people are filled with water.
She rapped, “Na Waluhya haga zenu zina maji, mali safi nakuambia haitaki maji na ju ni chain ipitishwe kwa Semenya,” which translates to, “And Luhyas, your behinds are filled with water, good stuff doesn’t need water, and because it’s a chain, pass it to Semenya.”
These lyrics have sparked outrage among netizens, who accuse Ngesh of promoting bigotry and endangering national unity.
Critics argue that her rap amounts to hate speech and have called on the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to investigate the matter.
Many social media users have voiced their disapproval, stressing the importance of artists promoting unity and respect among Kenya’s diverse communities.
The backlash highlights the sensitive nature of cultural and ethnic references in music and the potential consequences of crossing these boundaries.
As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how Ngesh and her group, Spider Clan, will respond to the criticism and whether any action will be taken by the NCIC or other authorities.
