The new IG Japheth Koome, first important task is to make sure Nairobi is safer for all citizens. Recently, crime incidents have risen to shocking levels. Muggings, assaults/serious assaults, robbery with violence, carjacking, murder, house breaking and burglaries are happening often.
Why crime is on the rise in Nairobi
There many reasons why crime has hit Nairobi residents hard, being the capital and with high population of opportunity seekers flooding in every day.
The biggest contributors of crime are unemployment, harsh economic challenges, drought that has gone for a long time, and lack of equal opportunities as a result of rural-urban migration, illiteracy and gang mentality.
Mr Sakaja, the Nairobi County governor,  has reached out to the new IG Japheth Koome to deal with the criminals ruthlessly. He says;

Congratulations Japheth Koome on taking oath as Inspector General of police. Will be calling on you later today to partner in dealing with insecurity that is spiraling in Nairobi. Be assured of my support and constant cooperation.
Our people have suffered the recent spate of insecurity and you have been the Nairobi Police Commander before. We have solutions to share with the IG since security is a National Police function. Will not rest till the police restore sanity and safety for our people. Be firm and don’t show mercy to those who have shown our people no mercy.
I’ve spoken to the new IG Japheth Koome and we have agreed that restoring security in Nairobi is a priority. We shall work together on this and meet to map out solutions. In as much as security is a National Function, it’s our shared responsibility. I’m confident this partnership will yield fruits. Poleni to my people for what you’ve gone through. Sanity and security is coming. I assure you the county government will do its part.
We will also protect our police officers as they go out and risk their lives to protect Kenyans. Tuko na nyinyi.
@GOV. JOHNSON SAKAJA
