Mwanaisha Chidzuga is keen on joining politics after the death of her mother Hon. Zainab Kalekye Chidzuga, a renowned and respected politician in the Coast’s political arena for decades.
Throughout her life Hon. Chidzuga was a champion of community-centered empowerment with an unashamed bias to women and youth.
She was a community leader and actively contributed to the women’s movement at local, national, and international levels through the Maendeleo ya Wanawake Organization.
She served in the National Assembly 2013-2017 as a County Member of Parliament representing Kwale county. During her tenure in Parliament, she steadfastly championed the revival of rural economies, advanced the economic empowerment of the least advantaged in society especially the youth, women, and people living with disabilities.
She served as a member in several public sector boards amongst them the National Irrigation Board, Coast Water services board and at the time of her death, the Special Economic Zone s Authority board.
Hon. Zainab Kalekye Chidzuga who is survived by 7 children was truly a remarkable woman who brought a change to the country by uplifting a lot of women and taking care of people from rural areas. She will truly be missed.
The entire nation mourned the death of Hon. Zainab Kalekye Chidzuga.
The media personality disclosed that she was by her side when her mother left this world saying that she was at peace knowing that her children were close and together.
“I was with her in the hospital because she was sick for a while. We spoke a day before her death because her condition was critical so we couldn’t talk much but wherever she is, she’s at peace.
She’s happy she left her kids together, that’s the most important thing. She was my adviser, I would go to her whenever I would have problems and I would get the energy to move on having in mind that I had my mum. I thank God for my mum, she was strong, she was not selfish and she would always wish good on people,” Mwanaisha said.
Mwanaisha also touched on politics saying that she’s always been a part of politics even long before she met her husband Danson Mungatana. She recalled how she was a part of the team that was organizing campaigns for her mother when she was a Member of Parliament and later on a Woman Representative.
She noted that she’s always been in politics because her mother has always been in politics her entire life.
“I have been in politics since way back even before I was married. My mother was on the front line in organizing campaigns in Kwale. She later became an MP, we supported her and later she became a Woman Rep. Already my mother was in politics, so my entire life I’ve been in politics,” noted Mwanaisha Chidzuga.
Mwanaisha Chidzuga wants to take over from where her mother left but as it so happens, so does her elder brother.
Apparently, she says it wasn’t a personal decision that made her want to vie for a political seat but it was the elder’s decision.
She says that the elders in Matuga constituency recommended herself and her elder brother for the same seat.
Touching on going head-to-head with her elder brother for the same parliamentary seat, Mwanaisha Chidzuga says there’s no bad blood between her and her brother whatsoever noting there are no indifferences between them.
“There are no indifferences among us. He is my elder brother and I love him so much, we are best of friends. We have done a lot together. It was not a personal decision, elders in Matuga constituency sat down and recommended the both of us for the parliamentary seat,” she explained shining clarity on her intentions of joining politics.
