I will admit my Swahili is pretty flawed especially when I try to speak it accurately and to large crowds. I may have passed Kiswahili in high school but that was a written test, not the spoken one. Thus lies the problem of most kids born in Nairobi in the last 30 years and counting. And maybe Muhoho Kenyatta’s problem.
The shame that the president’s son has been exposed to is note-worthy. while people may not shame you for having markers of extreme wealth they still want the common touch displayed by you. That means speaking in the local dialect or eating what the local people are eating. That is why Gideon Moi was also lampooned a few years back when he was heard speaking very poorly in Swahili to a large gathering.
The thinking goes: If he can’t speak like me, how can he speak for me? Thus he won’t be effective as my representative. This is the situation Muhoho found himself in. Out on the campaign trail for his father in Kaptumo, Nandi. He was supposed to give the vote of thanks in Swahili and his performance would earn a straight D were it to be graded. Poor! No conviction, more like a mumbling child.
Advice: Stick to the language you are good at and do not assault peoples intelligence. In the meanwhile start taking classes in private and when you can speak the language fluently like your father come out and speak. Just my advice but what do I know?
Here below is the video of his excellent performance:
