A Kenyan family is crying foul after their kin Miriam Hannah Njeri died under mysterious circumstances while at a deportation facility in Saudi Arabia.

26-year-old Njeri worked as a domestic worker for 11 months in Saudi Arabia until she requested to quit her job only for her to die mysteriously.

The young Kenyan woman died under unclear circumstances on August 19, 2022, after she reportedly fell from the third floor of a building.

Njeri’s lifeless body was found on the floor at a police station, where it was being held before it would be sent back to Kenya.

Her husband Jackson Karanja, who hails from Emburua village in Elementaita, Nakuru County, said she left Kenya in April 2021 to seek greener pastures after being convinced by her friends that she would be paid well.

Karanja spoke to his late wife two weeks before her death. She had requested him to send her Ksh40,000 to facilitate her return to Kenya, citing mistreatment, lack of food and congestion at the facility where she stayed for one week.

Before Karanja could send his wife the money, he received tragic news about Njeri’s death from her friend who told him that she had died while trying to escape but did not divulge more details.

The frustrated husband laments that he has been just hearing different versions about his wife’s death. Some people tell him that she killed herself while others are allege that she was killed at the holding facility.

Karaja has been struggling to find valid information about the death of his wife of 10 years. He visited the recruitment agency that took her to Saudi Arabia but they claimed they were  under new management and was not aware of her case.

He also visited the Saudi Arabian embassy in Nairobi but they referred him to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Karanja managed to get an agent who he communicated with and informed him about the process of repatriating his wife’s body from Saudi Arabia.

He was informed that it would cost him about Ksh1 million to Ksh5 million to fly back Njeri’s body to Kenya.
