Mejja is a mother’s boy who adores his mother for everything and anything she’s ever done for him growing up in Majengo, Nyeri.
Mejja isn’t afraid to let the world know how much he loves his mother and each chance he gets, he reiterates how his mother raised him single-handedly and thus his noble decision taking her mother’s second name as opposed to taking his father’s surname who wasn’t around while growing up in Majengo.
“I call myself Khadija because my father was a sperm donor.
As a child, I didn’t understand the sacrifices she made for us. Sometimes, I would find her crying in the house and she’d act like nothing was wrong.
When I grew up and had my family, I realized she went through a lot to raise three boys.
After coming to Nairobi, people would always comment about the name saying it’s a woman’s so I started insisting mtoto wa Khadija. She’s my inspiration,” he told media personality Marlene Chepchumba.
Taking to social media, Mejja, for the first time introduced his mother, whom he describes to be his rock and his number 1 fan since day one.
Mejja real name Major Nemeye Khadija alias Okwonkwo promised himself that he would do better when he has kids of his own because he has been raised without a father figure so he knows how important a father figure really is in a child’s life and he wouldn’t want his kids to go through the same ordeal he went through growing up without a father.
Mejja lists all the odd jobs he did before he was discovered by music producer Clemmo
“I have faced so many challenges that in an ideal situation, my father’s advice would have come in handy- but I had to deal with a lot on my own.
There are some things you can’t tell your mother as it would give her more stress.
“People don’t realize that I have children- I promised myself to never be away from them.
I didn’t want to raise my kids outside the family unit but circumstances forced me to.
It doesn’t matter if we are not together with baby mama- the child did nothing wrong,” said Mejja.
Mejja revealed at one point how he would brag to his friends and peers how his mother could down several painkillers not knowing[at that moment and time] that she had a brain tumor.
To add salt to an injury, his grandmother who was well-off and taking care of his family passed away leaving Mejja’s mother and his siblings in a rather tight spot. It emerged that his grandma wasn’t Khadija’s biological parent.
“In primary school, we had a good life as my grandmother was well off. Soon after she died it was made known to us my mother was not her biological daughter.
So the family was against my mother inheriting any property. To make matters worse, my mother was having constant headaches and we didn’t know she had a tumor as we had no money to visit a specialist,” he said.
Mejja indeed has a history with his mother and now that he is older, he knows and appreciates all the stuff single mothers usually do and go through to provide and take care of their children.
“Na Khadija, My Mum, My Rock Big Up To All The Single Mothers Out There Mkuwe Na Siku Poa Wagenge GODBLESS” Mejja captioned the selfie photo that he took with his mother.
