They say a nation has to live with the challenges of its time, but fellow Kenyans, we are truly living in difficult times.
I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mr Jacob Juma today morning. Deaths cruel hand in this case seems to be borne of an assassins bullet. A fact no less beguiling of a loss so overwhelming.
Mr Jacob Juma was a courageous and forthright crusader for the truth in our complicated world. His counsel on national transparency will be dearly missed by many. His advocacy on matter of public interest will remain an inspiration to us all. His death at the prime of his life is nothing short of a big tragedy.
To his family, I pray to the almighty God to assuage you of your grief. That you may find comfort in his love and will. That eventually you can find meaning in the purpose through which he allowed Mr Juma to live his life.
For the rest of us, we have to contend with an unchanged country. A country so stubbornly unwilling to untie the shackles of its past and stride into a more pure, more mature, and modern political atmosphere.
It is nothing besides shocking, that an individual who repeatedly forewarned of his own death and even named his expected assassins would not have round the clock state protection.
It is by this standard, and a very reasonable expectation, that everyone the deceased named as a potential suspect should be questioned by the police. I further call for immediate, thorough and open investigations into the causes of this crime. Failure to which, we shall only surmise lack of political will or complicity by the authorities.
As a citizen of this great country, I feel it is my duty to join these disappointed voices.
Fellow Kenyans, we have a choice on our hands. It is within our power to determine the future of this country. He may be dead but the voice of truth, however little, must not die with him. I urge all civil society, activists and bloggers not to abandon this journey at its most critical stage, as truth is the hallmark of justice.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi rajiun.”
