3 main reasons why Trevor Noah quit The Daily Show despite being paid a very fat salary

By the time Trevor Noah announced he was quitting The Daily Show in late 2022, the South African comic had reached the very top of American television.

He was one of the highest-paid hosts on late-night TV, fronting Comedy Central’s flagship programme with global influence, political clout and millions of loyal viewers.

Yet, as Noah has now revealed, the decision to walk away had little to do with money — and everything to do with burnout, identity and a life consumed by work.

Speaking candidly on the October 2024 episode of The Diary Of A CEO with Steven Bartlett, Trevor Noah laid bare the real reasons behind his shock exit.

1. ‘In South Africa, TV shows end’ — he never believed in staying forever

One of the most overlooked factors, Trevor Noah says, is cultural.

Unlike the US — where television hosts can sit behind the same desk for decades — Noah grew up in a media environment where shows naturally come to an end.

“So here is the thing, I think part of it comes from where I am from. In South Africa, TV shows end,” Trevor Noah explained.

“We’ve never had a TV show that runs for 10 seasons or 20 seasons. That’s not a thing, it ends.”

For Trevor Noah, longevity was never the goal.

“Sometimes things can be done,” he said simply, adding that after years at the helm, he felt the chapter had reached its natural conclusion.

Rather than cling on for comfort or cash, Noah wanted to leave while he still felt creatively fulfilled.

2. The pandemic exposed how work had swallowed his entire life

The Covid-19 pandemic proved to be the real wake-up call.

While many people were forced to stop, slow down and reassess their lives, Trevor Noah realised he had done the opposite — working relentlessly even as the world shut down.

“I took for granted that the pandemic was a moment where many people were forced to be at home,” he said.

“Many people will tell you the story of how they paused for a moment… We didn’t. I didn’t.”

Instead, Trevor Noah was producing The Daily Show from home, without breaks, without balance — and without reflection.

“One of the big things I learnt during the pandemic was I had made my life about work and I had made everything else secondary,” he admitted.

His friendships suffered as a result.

“I would see my friends if I did not have work — and everyone in my life knew this,” Trevor Noah said.

“They were like, ‘Oh yeah, work.’ They’d almost say, ‘Trevor, if you are not working, can you…’”

The moment was sobering — and irreversible.

3. Eight years was enough — he wanted to know who he was beyond the desk

By the time the pandemic ended, Noah had spent nearly a decade attached to The Daily Show — first as a contributor under Jon Stewart, then as host.

That longevity forced a difficult but honest question.

“On the other side of the pandemic, I realised like eight years of me being at The Daily Show — seven years of me hosting, one year of me being a contributor — I was like, ‘You sort of can do this forever, but what else can you do?’”

For Noah, the danger wasn’t failure — it was stagnation.

“Where else can you be? How can you spend your time? What would you like to do, and how would you like to do it?” he asked.

Those questions, he said, ultimately sealed his decision.

“There were many things when it came to me leaving The Daily Show,” Noah concluded.

Walking away from millions — but choosing himself

Despite earning what many would call a “very fat salary,” Noah made peace with leaving it behind.

Since his departure, he has focused on stand-up comedy, global travel, producing projects and reclaiming time for relationships — the very things he says were sacrificed during his late-night reign.

For Trevor Noah, quitting The Daily Show wasn’t an act of career suicide.

It was, by his own account, an act of survival.
